Trauma is a leading cause of substance abuse, and individuals who have experienced traumatic events are more likely to develop addiction. Studies show that approximately 60% of men and 50% of women in substance abuse treatment have experienced trauma. At Hope Lodge, we understand the connection between trauma and addiction and recognize the importance of addressing both issues simultaneously in order to achieve lasting recovery.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse, as well as neglect, abandonment, and exposure to violence. Trauma can also result from natural disasters, accidents, and other life-altering events.

Therapies for Trauma

We offer a variety of evidence-based therapies for treating trauma, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and somatic experiencing (SE). These therapies are designed to help clients process and heal from their traumatic experiences and to develop the coping skills needed to manage the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that helps clients to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. At Hope Lodge we use this therapy to treat PTSD.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that uses eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help clients process traumatic memories.

Somatic experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma that helps clients to increase their awareness of the sensations in their bodies and to develop the ability to regulate their nervous system.

Treating Trauma and Addiction at Hope Lodge

Addressing trauma and addiction together is important because trauma is often an underlying cause of addiction. Trauma can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and hopelessness, which can drive individuals to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Additionally, unresolved trauma can make it more difficult for individuals to stay sober and to fully engage in their recovery. By addressing trauma, clients can learn to cope with their past experiences in a healthy way, which can improve their chances of achieving lasting recovery from addiction.
